While there are only five images currently in the Arts & Crafts Images category, they cover a number of types of arts and crafts.
It somehow seems fitting that Randolph Caldecott's work should accompany this announcement.
My favorite among the group is a caricature of sorts that depicts two tired artists trudging home through the snow after a day of drawing and painting. In keeping with the exaggerated nature of caricatures, the artists' tools have been transformed into tools befitting a giant. With a quill pen, pencil and art brush carried upon their weary shoulders, this artists image could be used when discussing a number of artistic forms. It is a somewhat larger picture at 449px wide and 338px tall but it's simple lines allow it to look quite good at any size. The artist was the great Randolph Caldecott (1846-1886) and this image was found in a book entitled Old Christmas which was published in 1892. While many may have heard of the art award named for Caldecott, children of the 19th Century knew him as one of their favorite book illustrators. The British-born artist was quite prolific leaving a virtual library of treasury of works from illustrated novels and accounts of foreign travel, humorous drawings depicting hunting and fashionable life, cartoons and sketches of the famous Parliament inside and out, and sculptures and paintings in oil and watercolors exhibited in the Royal Academy and galleries.
